La pimpinela escarlata (Anagallis arvensis) es una planta de bajo porte de la familia de las Myrsinaceae.
En Europa la planta es considerada una maleza e indicador de suelos sueltos.
Los tallos tienen cerca de 45 cm de longitud y generalmente prostrada. Las hojas son ovales, verde brillantes, sésiles, de crecimiento opuesto. Las flores son pequeñas, anaranjadas, crecen en las axilas de las hojas de primavera hasta otoño. Los márgenes de los pétalos son crenados.
La subespecie Anagallis arvensis ssp. foemina tiene flores brillantes azul oscuras. Muchos botánicos la consideran dentro de Anagallis foemina.
Es conocida por ser el emblema del héroe de la ficción Pimpinela escarlata.

The Scarlet pimpernel (Red pimpernel, Red chickweed, Poor man's weather glass, Shepherd's weatherglass, or Shepherd's clock; Anagallis arvensis) is a low-growing, annual plant in the family Myrsinaceae, growing in Europe, Asia and North America.
The other common names (Poor man's weatherglass, Shepherd's weatherglass and Shepherd's Clock) relate to the fact that the flowers close when bad weather is approaching.
This common European plant is generally considered a weed and is an indicator of light soils.
The stems are about 45 cm long and generally prostrate. The bright green ovate sessile leaves grow opposite. The small orange flowers grow in the leaf axils from spring till autumn. The petal margin is somewhat crenate.
The subspecies Anagallis arvensis ssp. foemina has bright, deep blue flowers. Many botanist consider it a species on its own, namely Anagallis foemina.
It is most noted for being the emblem of the fictional hero The Scarlet Pimpernel.
